Sofonisba Anguissola was just 26 years old in this self portrait, but she had already been apprenticed to two renowned painters, traveled to Rome to meet and learn from Michelangelo, and later this same year she would meet the Duke of Alba, who would recommend her skills as a portrait painter to King Philip II of Spain. It was a good year for Sofonisba, and I bet you can absorb some of this good energy just by osmosis. The muted greens and luminous face of rising success will beam from this crisp tondo into your home.
