Albrecht Dürer had never seen a rhinoceros when he made this striking print. But for the German printmaking genius that was barely a hiccup. An Indian rhinoceros had been brought to Lisbon Portugal, and a drawing of the beast and a written description made their way back to the artist. A true renaissance man, Dürer was a dedicated naturalist, whose photo-realistic studies of hares, birds wings, and other creatures gave him enough knowledge of anatomy and physiology for him to flesh out the details and bring this creature to life.
